TEXAS SUMMER FASHION

Of course, it is only April and there’s still a slight nip in the air (perhaps wearing a t-shirt and sandals to work today was a touch optimistic), so the trick is to introduce some key SS14 pieces that will freshen up your wardrobe but won’t leave you shivering at the bus stop, or with a credit card bill full of regret if we suddenly plunge back into mid-winter again.

AND OF COURSE ANYTHING TEXAS RELATED!

As we all know Texas weather can get pretty hot and it becomes a challenge to dress fashionable and still stay cool. You can take all morning perfecting your make-up and it will sweat off by the end of the day. The night before heading out to work or school you rummage through your closet for the indefectible outfit you will wear for the next day, taking a chance of being the victim of, dare we say sweat stains, eww! There are many options to choose from when dressing for the Texas heat. Wearing printed or lightweight fabrics or fabrics that are know for great absorption. Here are some pointers to remember when preparing to step outside.

When it comes to picking out your clothes, you want to consider the fabric used to construct the garment. Remember that manmade fabrics such as polyester are not good for absorbency. More natural fibers like cotton and linen blends are great for warm weather. Even rayon can be worn, although it is a semi-synthetic fiber, rayon does not insulate body heat making it a great option for humid weather.

Prints

Prints are a great solution for concealing those icky sweat stains. And referring back to past post on mix and matching prints this would give you the opportunity to try out one of summer’s hottest trends.

Face value

Unless you’re going to work there really isn’t a need to apply a lot of make-up. If you feel naked without foundation, why not opt for a sun kissed glow using a bronzer and a little blush or a tinted moisturizer can also be an option. This will give the effect of a natural look. All that needs to be added is a little mascara and maybe a nude lip-gloss or to add some color a great lip stain. Covergirl has a new line of affordable lip stains that work really well.

The last thing to remember before taking your next trip outside is to always apply sunscreen. It doesn’t matter what your skin tone is, down the line you will be thankful that you took the necessary precautions to protect your skin from the sun, which can cause premature aging. Check out the slide show for some outfit and make-up inspirations.

Obviously wear what makes you comfortable, but remember it’s gonna be HOT!

Thriftin’ Away

This week is going to be all about how to find good thrift stores and what to buy and not to buy from them! So in my experience, a thrift store in the nice part of town usually has better stuff than the one in the bad part of town, and they are usually less picked over. There are always exceptions to the rule but you would rather go to Goodwill in Highland Park than in some tiny town that no ones every heard of.

There are also awesome online websites that can help you find thrift stores or resale shops in your area. Just enter the zip code on thethriftshopper.com.  and it tells you all of the stores listed in that area, complete with their hours, location and how to sign up for their mailing lists.

Seasonal rule..When people clean out their house and give stuff away then its time to hit up the thrift stores. Just after the first of the year is a great time, too. Not only is it the deadline for making donations that you can write off on your taxes, but it’s also right after the holiday season when people have bought tons of new stuff and are shedding the old stuff to make room. When you feel the need to start cleaning your house, take a load with you and get new stuff and the thrift store.

Best day! Is there really such a thing?

So it takes a couple of days for most thrift stores to process the items dropped off. So the best days to go are usually Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. The exception to this rule (locally) is Goodwill. I go to Goodwill on Sunday because that’s when they announce the color of the tag that’s going to be discounted for the week, and that’s when all the good sale stuff first becomes available. Usually by Monday morning, most of the good stuff that was discounted is already gone and it’s just junky stuff left on sale. Go often and don’t just visit the same stores.

Try to be open to new projects. Some things will look cheap and ugly but with a little sandpaper and paint you can make it new again.

Also don’t just think furniture. Nice business clothes can be found at these stores too! I have an interview tomorrow and I got some Ralph Lauren pumps that are going to be perfect.

Pay more for the things you know will last forever and you won’t ever grow tired of.  For everything else, pay as little as possible.

Try to think of a budget before you begin. Are you just doing 1 or 2 small projects or are you decorating a whole home?

I use Craigslist, and I’m not afraid to admit that. I have saved tons of money and gotten some really great things from some store I can’t afford. Pottery Barn, Ralph Lauren and even some nice art work I have gotten off Craigslist. Don’t let chipped paint, dated oak or ugly hardware deter you. You can always paint, stain and replace elements you don’t like. Be careful of scams, and don’t ever meet anyone alone!

Look for good deals on paint. Paint can really freshen up a room or make it look completely different. During the Spring season, Lowes and Home Depot always have cheaper prices on paint, and all DIY items. Maybe even do a bold, accent wall that will make a room pop.

As far as accessories go, look no further than Homegoods, Target, Ikea and World Market. You can get great designer things here for a price everyone can afford.

Garage Salllesss! One of my favorite past times in the spring is to get the paper, find 2-3 garage sales and hit them up on the weekend. You can turn some junky furniture into some gorgeous furniture with a little love and a sander.

The more patient you are the more money you will save. If you run out and buy everything you need that day, you’re  not going to get a good deal. Hobby Lobby, likes to have candles and candle holders on sale opposite weeks of each other. Never fails.. So if you can wait, then you can get both 1/2 off!

New lighting, This can change a gloomy dark room into something light and beautiful.Get some sheer curtains, to add in that natural light, this will also cut down on the electric bill.

livingroom

Ok, this is a big one that most people don’t think about! If you don’t have money to get all new cabinetry in your kitchen or bathroom, Install new door pulls and handles. This will give them a new look to a previously boring or out-of-date door pull. Same goes for your plumbing fixtures. Get a new faucet and some towels, and your bathroom is going to look brand new…unless you have that ugly pink tile that makes people cringe!

Be creative in your thinking and remember that you don’t have to go overboard in spending. Less is better, don’t clutter your home with junk you’ll never use, or things you’ll be tired of in less than a year.
